Answer

ArcGIS is a geospatial mapping program, which can be used with the researcher’s own data or with datasets (including census data and world-wide topographical maps).

The software can be downloaded (register here) on a student's computer, and activated with a code obtained from Bonni Wittstadt at the Eisenhower Library.

ArcGIS software is also installed on selected JH workstations in DC:

  • SAIS Library Workstation #1, to the left as you enter the Library (Nitze, 6th fl)
  • JHU Washington Libraries Resource Center on the 1st floor of BOB, 1717 Mass. Ave.

Online training is available, and the staff of the Eisenhower Library's GIS and Data Services Department are available for support.  Please note that ArcGIS licensing is for use in the United States only.

Though ArcGIS does NOT make versions of their software for a Mac OS, software exists that allows you to run Windows operating systems on Mac computers, and thus run all Windows only software on a Mac computer. More details here.
