Q. What is Proquest Ebook Central and how can I use it?

Proquest Ebook Central is an ebook lending platform. Thousands of online academic book links appear in the Hopkins catalog, Catalyst. You can read them on- and off-line. NOTE: Proquest ebooks do not work with certain versions of Internet Explorer.

Can I read ebooks on portable devices?

Downloaded ebooks can be transferred to any portable device that supports Adobe Digital Editions (ADE).  A list of compatible devices is available on the ADE website. Portable devices with browser support (such as the iPhone/iPad) can also access Proquest ebooks and Read Online via the free Bluefire app, which supports ADE.

What if I want to read an ebook offline?

When you click on Download, you’ll see a note saying that Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is required to read all Proquest ebook downloads.  A link to download the software is provided.

What is the loan period?

Between 1 to 7 days, with the maximum being a 7 day loan period.

Can more than one person read the same ebook at the same time?

Yes!  There is no limit to how many people can "borrow" the same book simultaneously.

Are there fines for overdue ebooks?

No.  When your time expires, you simply can’t access the book (even if you’ve downloaded it for reading offline) unless you borrow it again.

When the “loan period” has expired, will I be notified?

No.  If you want to continue reading the book, you simply initiate a new loan.

Can I print or copy books?

Printing and copying is governed by copyright, and usually limited to 10% of a book.  You will see a message letting you know how many pages you can print or copy.

Is there a way to keep track of the books I’ve used?

Yes.  Once you have accessed Proquest Ebook Central, click on Bookshelf to see the books that you’ve borrowed or accessed.  You will also see all the books you have access from your ADE interface.
Is there a way to organize the titles I’ve used (or might want to use)?

Yes.  From the Proquest Ebook Central interface, click on My Collections to create personalized folders. Before opening the Read Online option, click on the Add to Collection link to add a book to your collection folders.
Can I make notes in books and save the notes?

Yes, in the Online Reader (but not in ADE), your notes will be saved indefinitely. To access them, connect to Proquest Ebook Central, click on Bookshelf, then the book detail view, and then click on Bookmarks.  Or, go to a particular book where you made notes, and click on the Notes tab. Important:  Notes added to Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) viewer will disappear once your loan expires.

Can I add highlighting to an ebook?

Yes, you can block the text and right click to choose Highlight.

Is there a list of participating publishers?

Yes. Click on Advanced Search and go to Publisher.  The drop-down menu lists all the publishers.

What publication years are covered?

The JHU Libraries' arrangement with Proquest includes books published in 2011 and later.

How often does Proquest add new book titles to the JHU catalog?

New titles are added monthly.

If I want to browse or search just Proquest ebooks, how can I do that?

There's an entry in Databases A-Z for Proquest Ebook Central. When you click on the Proquest Ebook Central link, you’ll be prompted to enter your JHED login and password, regardless of whether you are on-  or off-campus.  If you want to browse or search, look for the search box.  You can choose Category and browse by broad subject, or Advanced for many other search options. Remember, Proquest Ebook Central does not work with certain versions of Internet Explorer.
