Q. Where can I find examples of National Security Council policy memos or papers?

A good source for National Security Council documents is the Declassified Documents Reference System database.  To look for NSC policy memos:

  • Select Advanced Search
  • On the Source Institution menu, select National Security Council
  • On the Document Type menu, hold down the Control key and select any appropriate items (memorandum, briefing, paper, report, etc.)
  • Limit by date, number of pages, or enter subject or name keywords

The Digital National Security Archive also offers similar search capabilities.

You'll find both of these dropdown menu of databases on our homepage and on SAIS Library's research guides for American Foreign Policy and Strategic Studies. Look for the "Primary Resources" tab.

If you don't find what you're looking for, or need more help, please be sure to contact a SAIS research librarian in person Mon-Fri 9-5, by phone 202-663-5900, or via email.
